How to wear a cardigan

Cardigans should be a staple in every women's closet but not all of us know how to wear them. Just follow these few rules and your will be on your way!

Things You'll Need:

a cardigan

Step
1

Cardigans are a fun way to spice up your outfit for the day, not to mention they are a great chic way to layer. First, pull out the cardigan(s) and grab some of your favorite outfits for work and play. Now start mixing and matching.

Step
2

FOR WORK: you can layer over a blouse and trousers. If the trousers are a wide leg, you want to stick with a shorter cardigan. If the pants are lower and slim around the waist you can wear a longer cardigan and then belt it at the waist if you like. This will expand your closet by 3-5 outfits immediately.

Step
3

FOR PLAY: pulling a cardigan over a simple dress will add a little "flavor" to the outfit. You can also pair it with jeans and a casual shirt for a more bohemian look. Don't forget to add jewelry or pin a brooch on the sweater for an old-fashioned look. Really the ideas are endless just try.

A couple of tricks to really look fun. If you have a great blouse with an interesting front or sleeves, use a short sleeve cardigan over it so you don't miss out on the decor of the top. Same goes for pants, if the top is unique, don't cover it up, use the cardigan as a border (it should stop right above the pant so you really emphasize the waistband).

Step

There are a couple of ways to wear cardigans.
First, you can button just the top three buttons; the eye will follow this line, which looks great on a woman.
Second, you can wear it over a slim fitting shirt and button it all the way, belt it or not (two different looks), and throw a scarf on or a neat necklace.
Third, play with the proportions of the cardigan and the outfit. Find the shape that works with your body first and then work with colors and textures.

Tips & Warnings

Pick up a couple of cardigans of different shapes, colors, and textures.

Wear colors and textures with simple outfits and throw in a simple cardigan with louder outfits, to tone them down a little.

Don't get cardigans with large pockets on the hip; they will only make you look larger. Stick to ones that you can button the top three buttons and let the rest flow with your body...this is flattering on most bodies.
